Descriptions:
Cartoons consisting of simple linear images first appeared during the prehistoric era and are usually referred to as cave paintings or petrographs. In the context of contemporary socety, cartoons usually refer to humorous, exageratted and stylized sketches published in magazines or newspapers. There are two important types of cartoons, namely editorial cartoons and strip cartoons. In addition to the printed media, cartoons also appear in the form of animation. This book is the author's effort to document the development of Malay editorial cartoons since their first appearance in the local press in the 1930s. The study aims to trace the development of the style and critical humour of Malay editorial cartoons by considering their cultural and political context, as well as the history of the press.
